October is Disability Awareness Month
For more than 70 years, October has been designated as Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Initiated by Congress in 1945, NDEAM is a national campaign intended to raise awareness about disability employment and to celebrate the vast and varied contributions workers with disabilities make to the economy.
“Inclusion Drives Innovation,” is the theme for Disability Employment Awareness Month 2017. Assistive technology dovetails neatly with this year’s theme. The ever increasing array of assistive technologies available opens more and greater opportunities for individuals with disabilities to seek employment and to become valuable contributors to businesses from coast-to-coast.
Missouri Assistive Technology has over the years worked with many individuals and employers seeking solutions to workplace barriers through assistive technology. When assistive technology is incorporated, talent shines and businesses succeed. Missouri Assistive Technology through its programs has helped individuals fund vehicle adaptations, modify computers, access the telephone and even start businesses.
Throughout October and in the months ahead, if you are a person with a disability or an employer seeking to hire or retain an employee with a disability, think how assistive technology can address barriers. And, as always, keep in mind that Missouri Assistive Technology is here to help you understand and incorporate assistive technologies.
